What? There’s actually a day that celebrates Sleep? Why didn’t I know about this before?! Well, in any case, Happy World Sleep Day people! March 18th is officially known as the day to celebrate sleep! Tell that to my boss, though.

So anyway, while I count the hours till I’m done with work and can go home to hit the sack, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 fun and interesting facts about our favourite pastime!

1. Although the reasons behind this are unclear, we tend to sleep better during new moons than during full moons! Dormant Werewolf who follows the opposite rule?

2. Difficulty in getting out of bed in the morning is an actual condition known as Dysania! The struggle is real! I knew I was not to blame!

3. Being sleep deprived and being drunk are extremely similar! After 16 hours without sleep, our bodies behave the same way as it would with a blood alcohol level of 0.5%, 0.8% being the legal limit!

4. Going without sleep for a long time also makes you hungry, due to falling levels of Leptin, an appetite-regulating hormone. Mmmmmmm, munchiiiies.

5. In Japan, sleeping on the job is actually a sign of an overworked employee, which leads to praises from the boss! Ahem, hope somebody’s listening!

6. 12% of people dream only in Black and White! This number supposedly was greater before colour TV was invented. Ha! TV is good for us!

7. Rather than 8 hours, 6.5 to 7 hours of sleep a day is enough for humans. Cats need more than 12 hours of sleep a day, and spend 2/3rds of their lives asleep! Is it any surprise, though?

8. The record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days, set by Randy Gardner in 1965. However, due to associated health risks of voluntary sleep deprivation attempts, The Guinness Book of World Records no longer keeps records of this feat!

9. Sleep deprivation can kill you a lot quicker than starvation. Christian Bale in The Machinist might’ve completely blown us away, but if you’ve been awake for almost a year, you’ve probably died and just not realised it yet!

10. Dreaming is an extremely normal thing for human beings, and people who do not or cannot dream usually suffer from one or more personality disorders! Lennon knew the truth!
