Widows are considered highly inauspicious in rural as well as some of urban India. Jitubhai has decided to not care about such stupid and useless beliefs. Not only that but he decided to crush this hardcore and backward view by inviting not one but 18,000 widows to his son’s wedding.
The presence of widows during prosperous occasions is believed to be disastrous but Jitendra Patel from Mehsana has trashed this ill-credence. He requested the presence of widows from Banaskantha, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Patan and Aravalli districts to bless his son, Ravi and his bride.
These widows were the special guests at the wedding venue at Derol, about 12km from Himmatnagar. Not only were they invited by were given a blanket and a sapling which they would tend to in their homes. Also, about 500 of them belonging to poor households were gifted milking cows to earn themselves an adequate living.
Jitubhai said to TOI,
It was my heartfelt desire that the couple should be blessed by widows, who are mostly neglected by the society. Their presence is considered a bad omen at auspicious functions but I wanted to prove that all these beliefs are nothing but superstitions.
TOI also talked to one of the widows, 55-year-old Hansa Thakore from Mehsana,
I can hope of earning a decent livelihood now that I have a cow. I never expected getting so much importance after becoming a widow.
Never have been widows invited to wedding but Jitubhai’s selfless deed of overcoming social taboos and setting such a beautiful example deserves a huge applause. May he find prosperity and good fortune in every walk of life.
