So, The International Women’s Day is here, and every guy seems to be proudly putting up celebratory statuses and wishing their female friends and acquaintances, with huge fanfare declaring themselves to be self-proclaimed feminists. Which is all well and good. But the reason this is also depressing is that as soon as the day is over, once again things will go back to the usual patriarchal cesspool of a world we live in.

The reason behind this is a lot of things. Ignorance, bias and close-mindedness being one of the most prominent ones. Half the male population has no idea what feminism is, while the other half are too bull-headed to think about anything to be bigger than themselves.

However, recently, quite a large number of popular male figures have openly come forward, supporting feminism and not just in words. From organising campaigns, raising awareness drives to trying to educate others about it, these are 7 of the most popular male celebrity figures of the world who have joined the universal fight against the injustices done to women and bringing about equality:

1. Farhan Akhtar

The UN Women’s South Asia Goodwill Ambassador was instrumental in launching the social campaign called MARD – Men Against Rape and Discrimination, following a horrific sexual assault and murder of a friend, which deeply affected him.

If you are a man who respects women… her rights, her dignity, her independence, her mind, her body, her life… you are a #MARD.”

2. Aamir Khan

An ardent supporter of the “One Billion Rising” campaign to end violence against women, the actor had also tried to bring women’s oppression to light through his talk show “Satyameva Jayate”.

I believe that to combat violence against women, men will have to change. Hitting women is not a sign of masculinity. Instead, it shows cowardice. If we truly want to be real men we will have to first learn to be sensitive.”

3. John Abraham

A part of the “Fever Voice of Change” campaign to support acid attack victims, the actor made a very valid point about educating men from a young age, instead of victim blaming.

It`s very important to respect a woman, but we men tend to forget that. So, it is very important that parents should teach their sons to be courteous towards them. The way a father treats his wife, his son also follows the same.”

4. Will Smith

The loyal supporter of feminism was questioned when he let his daughter chop off all her hair. There’s a lot to be learnt from his reply.

When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world. She has got to have command of her body.”

5. John Legend

While raising funds for “Chime for Change”, to improve the lives of women worldwide, the singer is an aggressive and ardent supporter of feminism, as we all should be.

All men should be feminists. If men care about women’s rights, the world will be a better place. We are better off when women are empowered – it leads to a better society.”
