‘And all I want is to travel the world’. How many times have you said this to yourself? Thousands? Millions? And how many times have you stepped back from realizing your dream just because of money problems? This man has a dream to travel the world and he is doing it. He is living his dream. Tea shop owner travels the world!
He is a chaiwallah. He has travelled 16 countries with his wife. You heard it right. How does one do that? It is the will power. It is possible. Yes it is, says Vijayan the globetrotter.
Vijayan is a 65 year old tea shop owner from Kochi. Bit by the travel bug at the tender age of 6, he resolved to make travel his dream. Vijayan’s father used to take his places and that is what made want for more.
But all of that came to a standstill when his father passed away. While struggling to make a living, Vijayan landed an opportunity to travel as a cook for a man to the Himalayas. Since then, there has been no looking back.
For the past 40 years, Vijayan and His wife Mohana have travelled to countries like Britain, UAE, Egypt and France.
Mohana hadn’t gone beyond Ernakulam. Now, her favourite place happens to be Switzerland. Vijayan’s favourite is the Nile river and he would want to visit again.
There only source of income is the tea shop. Money for the travel comes from loans and debts and Mohana saves 200 rupees everyday in a small wooden box.
Till now they have spent over 15 lakhs in their travel. However much the pain, Vijayan refuses to travel alone. His constant source of inspiration is his wife.
Hari M. Mohanan is the director of the short film Invisible Wings dedicated to Vijayan and Mohana. He spent about 15 hours with them and felt a growing admiration with each passing moment.
Vijayan is made fun of by people. They suggest him to save money and insure his old age but Vijayan has different dreams. He agrees that he is crazy. They are now planning their next trip to the US through crowdfunding and a generous contribution by Anupam Kher.
Watch this short film were Vijayan will inspire you beyond measure and don’t forget to share it with your buddies who are travellers or want to.
