According to Dipti’s statement, after leaving the Snapdeal office in Gurgaon, she took the metro to Ghaziabad and then got into an auto. The auto driver was allegedly one of the kidnappers. The auto, however, broke down halfway at Mohan Nagar, forcing the passengers to board another auto to the old bus stand in Ghaziabad. Minutes later, the only other female passenger in the auto was forced to get off at knifepoint by the four men in the vehicle, somewhere near the Hindon river. From there, they drove to Morti in the Raj Nagar Extension, and then took another car to Baghpat, before a 16km walk that involved wading across the Yamuna to Devender’s native village, Kami, in Sonipat. There, Dipti was kept in a sugarcane field throughout the day, where they treated her well and even gave her food and water. Devender later managed to whisk her away to a friend’s house in Murthal on a bike. In the morning, he left her at a suburban railway station near Narela, telling her that it had been a male friend of hers who had plotted the kidnapping and how he was trying to save her.

After Dipti returned home and the investigation was conducted, it was discovered that he had been stalking her for over a year after first spotting her on January 15th at the Rajiv Chowk metro station in Delhi. It was at that moment that his infatuation with her began. decided that he wanted her for himself. In one year he had followed her 150 times. He started keeping a track of what she was wearing, who she was with and where she lived, even finding out trivial details such as her favourite brand of chips. He purchased two autos knowing that she took a rickshaw to get home from Vaishali. Planning everything meticulously, Devender had convinced his accomplices that Dipti was a top businesswoman whose abduction would assure Rs 10-12 crores. He was so confident in himself, that he’d even planned to marry her and settle down in Nepal, after “rescuing her heroically“.
