Valentine’s day is almost upon us! Not that we need a specific date to celebrate love, being known as an eternally jovial bunch! But, if you have a partner, who’s a Bengali, listen up, and listen well! We Bongs have our very own Valentine’s day! Saraswati Puja, which is celebrated on the 5th day of the Hindu calendar month of Magha, is the Bengali Valentine’s day, and this year, it falls on 13th Feb, exactly a day before Valentine’s Day! If you’ve just barely managed to save up enough for V-day till now, you might have a mini panic attack, realising you’ll have not one, but TWO days non-stop to celebrate with your beloved, if you’re with a Bong. But trust me, you will be able to keep your kidney and your right leg in spite of that! Whew!

So, what makes this day so exceedingly awesome?

No Studies!

The first and foremost thing about this day that you’re gonna love is that your partner’s gonna get a parents-approved reason to skip studies of any kind, for the whole day! Even if their Final Exams are coming up! Parents themselves say, “Aj porte hobe na, boigulo thakurer paa er kache rekhe ay.” Yay! No studies, so you gotta think up an excuse for your parents too if you plan to spend your day with him/her, as you probably won’t get the same privilege!

No restrictions!

Being a puja day, us Bongs get an unimaginable level of freedom on this day, so you can pretty much spend the entire day outside, with your love, without any “chaap” from their folks! No phone calls from their mom asking for updates every 30 mins, or their dad’s disapproving voice echoing the summons to get back on time! Undisturbed, romance, here it comes!

The Kurtas and sarees come out!

Another awesome part of Saraswati Puja is that all bongs get decked up in traditional clothes on this day, looking oh-so-enchanting! If you’re a girl, seeing your guy in that Kurta-pajama, or kurta teamed with Jeans, and chappals is bound to make you go weak in the knees! And if you’re a guy, bro, trust me, there’s no sight more beautiful than seeing your girl in that saree elegantly draped around her, with that hint of a shy smile on her lips! Carry oxygen cylinders, coz your breath is gonna be taken away, I promise you that!

Schools closed!

On this day, either all the schools are closed, or they also partake in celebrating the occasion, with an extravagant puja and “prasaad”! This makes it the best thing if you happen to study in the same school as your partner, cause then you two can spend some quality time together, right under the teachers’ noses, along with enjoying the occasion!

The food!

Being a puja ensures there is gonna be an abundance of delicious, mouth-watering ”bhog”, cooked at your partner’s home! And if the folks know about you two, you’re in for a treat of a lifetime! You will certainly be invited, and let’s just say, you won’t be disappointed! From “luchi-begunbhaja-payesh” to “khichudi-aloor-dum”, you’ll be spoilt for choice! And that’s not all, if you guys are out on a date, you don’t even need to look for fancy, posh restaurants to splurge at, cause the paara pandals on this day also hand out the delicious prasaad, you’re sure to get addicted to!
