The alleged Indian spy, Kulbhushan Jadhavarrested on 25th March by Pakistani officials in Balochistan, has now confessed to being a RAW agent, in a video released recently, at a press conference attended by Pakistan Army spokesman Lt. Gen Asim Bajwa and Information Minister Pervez Rashid.

In the video, Jadhav, stating that he was still with the Indian Navy, said that he had been directing various activities in Karachi and Balochistan “at the behest of RAW“, the Indian intelligence agency, and had played a key role in the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi. Terming Jadhav‘s arrest a “big achievement”, Bajwa said that Ajit Doval, the Chief of RAW, and India’s National Security Adviser, was Jadhav‘s direct handler. Bajwa also said,

His goal was to disrupt development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with Gwadar port as a special target. This is nothing short of state-sponsored terrorism… There can be no clearer evidence of Indian interference in Pakistan.

Jadhav said in the video, that his main purpose, working for Mr. Anil Kumar Gupta, the Joint Secretary of RAW, was to meet Baloch insurgents, especially in the Baloch Student Organisation, and, with their collaboration, carry out activities of anti-national or terrorist nature, including killing or maiming of Pakistani citizens.

By 2002, I had commenced intelligence operations. In 2003, I established a small business in Chabahar in Iran. As I was able to achieve undetected existence and visits to Karachi in 2003 and 2004, and, having done some basic assignments within India for RAW, I was picked up by RAW in 2013 end.

India however, has been vehemently denying that Jadhav is an intelligence operative and New Delhi had also demanded consular access to him. However, it was denied, as the Pakistani government claimed to have recovered travel documents and multiple fake identities from Jadhav, establishing him as an Indian spy who entered into Balochistan through Iran. When Jadhav was being shifted to Islamabad for interrogation, an unnamed official said that the spy, an expert in Naval fighting techniques, had revealed that he had bought boats at the Iranian port in Chabahar in order to target Karachi and Gwadar ports.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, however, the Indian ministry of external affairs dismissed the entire confession, saying that the video “clearly indicates tutoring”. Jadhav‘s final fate is yet to be determined, and this raises several pertinent questions about how this will impact the already volatile relations between the two countries.
