On an average, one farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes in India,” says Smita Narula, director of CHRGJ. In the year 2014, India reported a total of 5650 farmer suicides.
Drought, debt, government economic policies and many other reasons have forced our farmers to take their lives. They are the ones who put food in our plates and they are dying. Not worrying about the bad weather or bad health for that matter, they engage in this profession for generations.
Earlier this year we saw Nana Patekar and actor Makrand Anaspure. stepped up to help farmers of Marathwada, Latur. They met the farmers and were deep traumatised to see their plight. “I feel suffocated. I couldn’t sleep at night seeing farmers die everyday,” said the critically acclaimed actor Nana Patekar in an interview to NDTV. Since then he has been a constant support to the farmers, has helped over 60 families and has urged the public to join in.
Bollywood superstar, Akshay Kumar got in touch with the drought-hit farmers and donated a sum of 90 lakhs to 180 farmer families who have lost their loved ones to the crisis.
To further embolden the cause and elevate the farmers from their present condition, Mahindra rise and joined the motion. Their campaign Seed The Rise is to improve the lives of our farmers. Mahindra believes that together we can and we will overcome this dire situation. For the total sum that is donated, Mahindra will donate the exact amount from their side (therefore doubling it) to Five major projects of Sustainable cultivation, Income enhancement, Alternative Livelihood, Information technology and Education.
Supporting this movement is none other than the very famous and talented Nawazuddin Siddique. He needs no introduction but you should know that he is a farmer too. Born in a small village in Budhana, Uttar Pradesh, the actor had to struggle his way to stardom but he hasn’t forgotten his roots.
