The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has launched a meat ban for four days owing to the Paryushan. Generally the Mumbai government keeps it for two days during the festival. Things changed this year. The response came when Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation had introduced a meat ban for eight days in the city followed by BJP to ban meat sale for seven days starting from 10th to 17th September 2015.
The ban was first introduced by Congress in 1994 for Jain festival. However, shops are allowed to serve meat, says NDTV. The ban was supposed to be held for eight days only. However, the Shiv Sena protested the same by reconsidering it to four days, keeping in mind the sentiments of the Hindus. The dates decided for the same will be 10th, 13th, 17th and 18th of September in Mumbai. All slaughter shops will be closed these four days owing to Deonar abattoir and sale of meat will be stopped in the city. The decision to such a ban was demanded by the BJP politicians like Raj Purohit and Atul Shah and passed by the BMC to follow and preach Ahimsa by the Ahimsa Sangh’s Vishwamitri Trust.
The new law enforced by the Mumbai government have given rise to mixed feelings among the people of various communities. Some say it’s a land of the Brahmins, where we follow the ideologies of Geeta and therefore, no slaughter or consumption of animals should take place. While some say this is anti-democratic. Everyman, according to his democratic right, is free to consume meat. However, that does not give him the right to kill an animal. The Shiv Sena group says that government should not make attempts to take away the freedom of the Hindus in order to please a particular community. There have been increased controversies among social media where Mumbai has been named ‘ban-istan.’ According to the officials, there will no hardly any effect on the sales of eggs and fish. Rage and anger however, arose among the BJP and the BMC. The same has also been referred to as fascist by the BJP. The move has enraged massive uproar among the social media sites, protesting against the same.
What comes as a surprise is the front page news of a leading daily. Many of you may have come across this. While the PM is emboldening the public to freely practise their faith, the page also shows ‘BJP having its way’! Seems like the PM and BJP aren’t the same after all.
