Just a day after saying “we want the whole world to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai”, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat asked the organisation’s cadre to refrain from “forcing” people to chant the slogan.

While dedicating the building where the BJP’s previous avatar, the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, was set up in 1951, the historical Smriti Bhawan in Lucknow, to the public, Bhagwat said on Monday,

We have to create so great an India that people will themselves say Bharat Mata ki Jai. We don’t need to force it on anybody. We have to give direction to the world with our life. There is no need to force our system and thoughts on anyone; there should be a desire to consider the whole world as ours.

The RSS chief was speaking at a function to inaugurate the building which will be housing several offices of Sangh affiliates in Lucknow. An RSS functionary also said that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to stay there and was still registered as a voter from that same address. Speaking on the concept of taking the ‘sarva samaj’ (entire society) along, and hinting that chanting nationalistic slogans should be a voluntary – not a mandatory – exercise, Bhagwat said,

Our conduct should be such that people must chant the slogan on their own. It has to come from within. Everyone is our own, and we have to take everyone along.

After the statement Bhagwat had made in Kolkata on Sunday, this, however, seemed highly hypocritical. He had expressed the RSS’s desire to make the entire world chant the slogan, saying that a separate country (referring to Pakistan) had been carved out for people who did not want to stand with the “qualities of Bharat”. Perhaps Bhagwat had smoked some really high-quality weed, or had some kind of an enlightening epiphany just before this latest speech? Who knows.

On the very same day, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi, who was also in the state capital, had said that he wouldn’t chant the slogan “even if a knife was held to his throat“!

Well, although Bhagwat ended up contradicting his own words from just a day ago, in light of all the uproar about anti-nationalism and intolerance that’s been going around, seeing someone like him speak somewhat sensibly, for once, is definitely a nice change!
