Owning a favourite pair of Jeans is almost like having your own pet, but without having to do any of the extra work! Literally! Unlike your other clothes, you don’t have to wash it that often, no ironing, no worries if it gets faded, or even torn, it will still continue being the piece of clothing you automatically pick up first, as a habit (we do recommend washing it, though, periodically at least)! But each of our pair of jeans has had one particular feature that has been continuously befuddling us since ages!
The tiny pocket, inside the larger, actual pocket of your jeans, which seems to serve no purpose, in particular, being too small to hold anything at all, of significance.
Well, after extensive research, and consulting with all of the jeans manufacturers of the world, we finally found out. (well, no, we just got it from a Quora thread and a Levi Strauss blog page, actually).
This pocket was actually designed to hold pocket watches. You know, back in the old wild west days, when people used to carry pocket watches? You’ve seen enough cowboy movies to know what I’m talking about!
On the thread, Nitin Sachdev wrote, “It’s a watch pocket. Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcoats. To keep them from getting broken, Levi’s introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch.“
This was confirmed by Levi’s blog page, which states: “The first blue jeans had four pockets—only one in the back and, in the front, two plus the small, watch pocket. Originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name, this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few.“
Levi’s historian Tracey Panek also said, “The pocket appears on the oldest pair of jeans in the Levi’s archives, which date to about 1879.”
So that should have quenched your curiosity, hopefully. Now whether you want to dress up as an urban cowboy, go full hipster with the pocket watch, or simply use the little pocket in jeans to store coins, matchboxes, condoms, or any other tiny things you might lose otherwise, that’s completely up to you!
