Shishani, who is also called Omar the Chechen, is known for his signature red beard, and is one of ISIS’ most skilled commanders, having once been part of an elite military unit in Georgia.

The U.S. State Department has a $5 million reward on his head. The Chechen fighter served as the de facto Minister Of War for ISIS. and is also rumoured to be a close military adviser to ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who is said to have relied heavily on him.

The strike involved several waves of manned and unmanned aircrafts, targeting Shishani near Al-Shadadi, and is believed to have been successful, however, as of now, official confirmation of his death hasn’t been possible.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook, still assessing the results of the strike, said that Shishani’s death would undermine the terrorist group’s ability to coordinate attacks and defend its strongholds, and also hurt the Islamic State’s ability to recruit foreign fighters, especially from Chechnya and the Caucus regions.

Initial assessments indicate that Shishani was likely killed along with an additional 12 Islamic State fighters. Speaking on condition of anonymity, several U.S. officials were optimistic that the strike was successful, however, no one could confirm anything as of now.

The news, however, should be taken with a grain of salt, as of now, as in the past, several erroneous reports of Al-Shishani’s capture and death have been circulated in the media, and later dismissed after the commander was seen in new propaganda videos of the militant group.

If confirmed, though, this would mark an extremely significant victory of the United States’ in the war against the extremist group.
