Right after we achieved independence, the first thing that was done was the formation of The Indian Constitution. But having had so many British laws still in effect at the time, a lot of them found their way into OUR constitution as well.

However, some of these laws are so utterly ridiculous that we cannot help but wonder what in the world our newly formed Government was smoking at the time! But that’s not even the worst part, most of these laws are still in effect even today!

So let’s take a look at some of the weirdest, most ridiculously insane laws which are still in effect in our country, and need to be gotten rid of ASAP!

Fine for having a third child in Kerala

China isn’t the only one with strict laws monitoring population growth! In Kerala, a fine of Rs10,000 is imposed on parents who have a third child! Remember that “3g pe busy” ad by Idea? It all makes sense now!

Unsuccessful suicide is illegal

According to Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, suicide is legal, but if you fail to kill yourself, you’ll be thrown in jail! If you’re considering it, our first advice would be to seek help. But if not, better plan it well!

Gmail is banned in government offices

In order to monitor employee activity, Gmail is banned in all Government offices.  BJP MP Tarun Vijay however, took it a step further, declaring Gmail to be an instrument of US espionage in India, and calling for the law to be expanded all over the country!

You need a permit to fly a Boeing 737, and also a kite

According to The Indian Aircraft Act, 1934, a kite is also an aircraft, and you need a permit to fly one! There goes all your Vishwakarma puja plans!

If you feel sick in a hotel, say hello to cops

According to the Indian Sarais Act, 1887, you can pop into any hotel for a drink, or a roll in the hay, but if you fall sick, the manager can call the cops on you! The inspiration behind the lines “You can check in anytime, but you can never leave…”, in Hotel California by Eagles?

Women are literally incapable of adultery

According to The Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Section 497), if a man is caught for hooking up with a married woman, he can be thrown into jail for adultery, but in the reverse situation, a woman is exempt from prosecution!

Only the Government can deliver letters

According to The Indian Post Office Act, 1898, only the Indian Government has the right to deliver letters! So I guess all this time I’ve been illegally getting stuff home delivered to me from online shopping sites! Nice.
