Prayar Gopalakrishnan’s statement has outraged many.
“A time will come when people will ask if all women should be disallowed from entering the temple throughout the year. These days there are machines that can scan bodies and check for weapons. There will be a day when a machine is invented to scan if it is the ‘right time’ for a woman to enter the temple. When that machine is invented, we will talk about letting women inside,” said Gopalakrishnan.
He has been recently appointed as the Devaswom Board President of the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. His controversial statement has infuriated many men and women across the country and they are not keeping in under wraps. A campaign named #HappyToBleed has been launched to counter sexism and taboos related to menstruation. The Happy to Bleed page on Facebook run by a young woman named Nikita Azad, responded sternly and asked fellow believers to join in.
The campaign asks supporters to hold Menstruation merchandise and signs saying ‘Happy to Bleed’ to strictly oppose the humiliation surrounding this absolutely normal biological phenomenon.
And not just Facebook users but a Bollywood-celebrity-turned-writer-cum-columnist also wrote a satirical blog on the same. Twinkle Khanna who has recently published ‘Mrs Funnybones’, wrote [sic] ‘Well, if rules have to be followed strictly, then it should be both ways. To get to Sabarimala, men are meant to prepare themselves with 41 days of rigorous fasting and celibacy.’
