Any dog lover will tell you that dogs are the best creatures of all. Man’s (and Woman’s) best friend is our companion, our protector, and our friend. The reason being that dogs are simpler, and love unconditionally, unlike us complex human beings. Time and again they’ve both won and broke our hearts with their love, loyalty, and devotion, inspiring countless movies like Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, and Marley & Me! Reaffirming our immense love for dogs yet again, Sugar, an 11-month-old Labrador Retriever recently saved her owner from a robber posing as a courier delivery boy in South Delhi.

It was around 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20th, at Som Vihar, in the R K Puram area in South Delhi, when the doorbell rang at the Singhal residence. 51-year-old Rashmi Singhal was the only one at the house, since her husband, Pankaj, a businessman dealing in food products, her daughter, and her 78-year-old mother-in-law were all away. Sugar was the only one present. Opening the door, Ms. Singhal saw through the iron mesh a bearded man in his late 20s. Pretending to be a courier boy, the man asked whether it was the Singhal residence, and said that he had a letter for them.

However, as soon as she opened the iron mesh gate, the man viciously kicked her in the abdomen, and grabbing her by the shoulders, pinned her down. But her shouts of help were heard by the 11-month-old Sugar, who came to her rescue, pouncing onto the attacker, causing him to lose his balance and fall down. Having lost her grip on him, Sugar attacked again, but by then, the man had managed to get to his feet, and had run downstairs. Sugar still chased him for a while, but the man escaped.

Ms. Singhal, mostly unharmed because of Sugar, was later taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries and soon discharged. The chairperson of Som Vihar’s residential society was informed about the incident and a complaint was also lodged with the police. An official said,

A case under Section 451 (house-trespass in order to commit offense) of IPC has been registered in connection with the matter. We are checking CCTV footage to ascertain the identity of the accused at the earliest.

This is how a woman in distress was saved from what could have been an extremely dangerous outcome, due to her pet’s unflinching loyalty and bravery, proving yet again, that dogs are probably the only creatures on earth who love you more than they even love themselves!
