The recent flurry of Indian actors and actresses making their debut in Hollywood has us all pretty excited! From Priyanka Chopra’s critically acclaimed Quantico to Deepika Padukone gearing up for XXX: Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson, our desi superstars are advancing deftly into the big bad west.
Keeping in line with that, our very own Dhanush of Raanjhanaa fame will be making his debut in Hollywood. And guess who he’s going to be sharing screen space with? Uma – The Bride – Thurman, of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction!
The Kolaveri Di singer, who’s also Rajnikanth’s son-in-law, has already made a huge name for himself down South, and with his brilliant performances, has galloped through Bollywood. And if that wasn’t all, he would be playing the lead itself, alongside Thurman.
Directed by Iranian-French director Marjane Satrapi, the film titled The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir Who Got Trapped In An Ikea Cupboard is based on the translated version of a French best-seller book, L’extraordinaire voyage du fakir qui était resté coincé dans une armoire Ikea, by Romain Puértolas.
The film revolves around a conjurer, Ajatashatru Oghash Rathod, played by Dhanush, from a forgotten Indian colony of artists, who is sent to Paris on a secret, hush-hush mission by his mother, and portrays his journey of self-discovery, which slowly reveals a fakir in search of love, honesty and a place to call home. The film will also star Alexandra Daddario of True Detective and San Andreas.
The movie will be shot in several locations, including India, Paris, Morocco and Italy. The director, who is best known for the big screen adaptation of her own popular graphic novel, Persepolis, seemed extremely excited to work with the Tamil Star.
Speaking about her reasons for choosing Dhanush, Satrapi told Times Of India,
As I was watching various Indian movies, Dhanush became the most obvious choice — his intelligence, his killer smile, his ability to enter fully into the skin of any character he played (and I can go on and on forever) made me confident that he was the one.
Dhanush, who co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan in last year’s Shamitabh, won his first National Award in 2010 for his role in the film Aadukalam. His second National Award was as producer for Kaaka Muttai in 2014.
Well, here’s wishing Dhanush all the best, and we, for one, will be anxiously waiting, with bated breath for the grand Dhanush Hollywood debut!
