Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Taiba operative on day 2 of his deposition in a Mumbai court made several revelations about his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. From a secret, undisclosed location in the United States, Headley told the court, via video conference how he was motivated by Jamaat-ud-Dawa and that the ISI provided tactical and financial support to the LeT or Lashkar-e-Taiba, to train terrorists. Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam led the enquiry.

Here’s what we know so far:

  1. Sajid Mir of Lashkar-e-Taiba was his main contact, who instructed him to take a general video of the city of Mumbai.
  2. He changed his name from Dawood Gilani to David Headley in 2006 so that he could enter India undetected, under an American name.
  3. He joined LeT after being “influenced” by its head Hafiz Saeed and took his first “course” with them in 2002 at Muzaffarabad. In their training camps, they were taught that India is the enemy of Islam. According to Headley, ‘Jihad’ is to fight against enemies of Islam.’
  4. Except for the place of birth, date of birth, mother’s nationality and passport number, all other information in his visa application were fabricated.
  5. There had been 2 previous attempts, however, they had both been unsuccessful. It was finally during the third attempt that the attack was successful, on November 26, 2008.
  6. Headley was arrested along with Retired Major Abdur Rehman Pasha in the Landikotal area near the Pakistan-Afghan border because of looking like a foreigner. During his arrest, he was interrogated by Major Ali. It was Major Ali who later introduced Headley to Major Iqbal of Pakistan’s ISI.
  7. Dr. Tahawwur Hussain Rana helped Headley get the Indian visa. He had met him in a military school in Pakistan’s Punjab province, and Dr. Rana was his schoolmate for five years. After school, Rana went on to become a doctor in the Pakistani Army in Rawalpindi. However, Rana was unaware of the plan till the last minute.
  8. Headley named 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed as his mentor, in the court, saying, “I was inspired by Hafiz Saeed’s speeches.” He also identified him, from Saeed’s photograph, shown to him by the court.

In light of these findings, the connection between the ISI and the terrorist groups have become quite clear. This was crucial for India as it will help in nailing the Inter-Service Intelligence for the deadly terror attack in which 166 people were killed.
