The Indian Censor Board, heavily criticised for its hypocrisy and illogical decisions, has once again been in the news for giving the movie Aligarh an Adult rating. However, it had no qualms about a steamy threesome as part of a music video for the film Ishq Junoon.
Aligarh, a biographical drama, starring Rajkummar Rao and Manoj Bajpayee, is based on the real-life incident of Professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was ostracised and fired from his job because of his alleged sexual orientation. Ishq Junoon on the other hand, is a romantic thriller, with Rajbeer Singh, Divya Singh and Akshay Rangshahi playing the lead roles.
Another movie which almost saw the dark side of the Indian Censor Board was the R. Madhavan movie Saala Khadoos, because the board initially had a problem with the word “Saala“, in the title. However, the movie was eventually approved.
Expressing his anger and disappointment, director of Aligarh, National Award winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta said:
“When the censor board saw the film they asked for certain cuts. I am a bit surprised by the cuts they have asked for. The film in many ways is about loneliness, relationships, rejection. It’s about a homophobic society. What has happened is the censor is behaving exactly like the people who suspended professor Siras.”
This brings to light the hypocrisy of the Indian Censor Board, which deems the concept of “Homosexuality” unfit for children and teenagers but has no issues about gratuitous threesomes.
Quick to defend his decisions, however, Censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani said:
