Most fans remember him best for his role as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s butler extraordinaire, in The Dark Knight trilogy. Caine’s Alfred was as pivotal as Christian Bale’s Batman in the Dark Knight’s crime-fighting exploits, guiding and mentoring the caped crusader into becoming The World’s Greatest Detective. Caine’s involvement with the trilogy’s director, Christopher Nolan, has led to him being in almost every Nolan-directed film since then, including The Prestige, Inception, and most recently, Interstellar.

Now it’s next to impossible to choose 3 specific movies and call them his best work, out of the countless masterpieces he’s worked in, but leaving aside his work in The Dark Knight trilogy, these are our top 3 favourites!

1. Get Carter (1971)

If there’s one movie that we HAD to call Caine’s single greatest performance, it would be Get Carter. The brutal but enigmatic crime film featured Caine as Carter, a Newcastle-born, London-based gangster. Caine’s portrayal of the vengeful Carter, both magnetic and ruthless in his ferocity, truly made it a crime classic.

2. Sleuth (2007)

The 2007 movie starring Jude Law and Caine was actually the remake of the original 1972 movie, in which Caine played the leading role. The deadly battle of wits and deceit between the two characters, enhanced by the mind games both play with each other easily make this one of the most engrossing mystery thrillers ever made!

3. Harry Brown (2009)

This dark and gritty British crime film had Caine playing a retired Royal Marine, who transforms from a widowed pensioner to a hardened vigilante, after being pushed to the limit when local neighborhood gangs murder his only living friend. Conveying a strong political message about the state of crime and unrest in the projects of London, Caine’s complex portrayal of the titular character made this brutally gory revenge drama incredibly haunting.
