A diminutive cutie with several tedious affairs“.

That is how Arvind Kejriwal’s classmates described him under the column ‘Tongue in Cheek’ in the 1989 yearbook for IIT Kharagpur’s Nehru Hall, Udyoga.

A mechanical engineering student, Kejriwal stayed on the third Floor’s D Block, of IIT Kharagpur’s Nehru Hall from 1985-89. During this time, his college Professors and classmates remember him as a quiet, laid-back fellow, who took part in debates and dramatics. Arvind Kejriwal in College

Pradip Gupta, who runs the canteen at Nehru Hall, used to refer to him as ‘bachcha’ because of his slight frame.

“One thing I noticed was that he never had a free meal, which he could have had as in-charge of the mess. He was always very honest.”

Called “Kejri”, by his friends, he is remembered as being an introvert and quite studious. One of his seniors, Saikat Sarkar, said that Kejriwal was one of the top 5 nicest guys he’s known.   Arvind Kejriwal in College

“He was a good guy. Never aggressive, sensible and always somebody one could rely on. Out of a class of 35 students, Arvind was always in the top 10 or 12. He was well-rounded.”

He was asked to describe his IIT days, in an interview, to which, he said:

“I passed out of Kharagpur in 1989. I remember everything apart from studies. I suppose that was the case with most people. I believe education is not about studies. It shapes the complete personality of a person. The IITs are unique because of their cosmopolitan atmosphere. They bring India together. In Regional Engineering Colleges you may find students of similar vernacular backgrounds, but the IITs are a place, which bring all of India together. There are no ethnic barriers, religious barriers, and caste barriers. What I am today has been shaped in large part by my stay in the IIT.”

So it seems that Kejriwal might have joined politics a lot later in life, but he was pretty much always, an Aam Admi! What are your thoughts?
