Nepal makes a mark while selecting its first female president. Bidhya Devi Bhandari is the first lady president which Nepal elects. Read about the things you did not know about the new president.


The 54-year-old leader of the Communist party and a women’s rights campaigner has been selected as the first female president.

She has promised to safeguard the minority and women’s rights in Nepal as the new President.



Being the defense minister since 2009 to 2011, Bidya Devi Bhandari has successfully carried out all her duties towards the country.

It is her opponent Ram Baran Yadav whom she has replaced as the New President of Nepal securing 327 to 214 votes for becoming the Himalayan nation’s head of the state. She has always been a brave woman since her journey started in politics.

Bidhya successfully fought cancer that attacked her five years back.

Bidhya got married to party’s general secretary, Madan Bhandari at the age of 21, who died in a mysterious car accident in 1992.

After the sudden demise of her husband, Mrs. Bhandari was allotted the parliamentary seat which was vacant.

She is presently the leader of the ruling communist party.


President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated Bidhya Devi Bhandari for her election as President. He hopes that under the ruling of Bidhya, the Himalayan Republic would be able to achieve peace and tranquility. “Your election comes as a critical juncture in Nepal’s history“, said Pranab Mukherjee to Bidhya Devi.
