When the Qatar Airways aircraft landed at Goa Airport on 27th April, little did the Airport authorities know what they’d find. A routine post-landing inspection of the aircraft by the Air Intelligence Wing led to them discovering a duty-free plastic bag that had apparently been dumped in the dustbin in the rear-left toilet.

Goa’s Customs Commissioner, K. Anpazhakan said,

An inquiry was made with crew members of the aircraft which had arrived from Qatar. They informed that they were not aware of the owner of the bag.

When the bag was finally opened, after having gone through appropriate scans, it was found to contain gold jewelry weighing a whopping 7.124 kgs! With no apparent claimers, the airport officials were left wondering how it was smuggled onto the plane in the first place, and had managed to bypass security. Mr. Anpazhakan said,

The correct value of the jewelry would be known only after an approved valuer is approached. Inquiries were made with the arrival passengers but no one was having any knowledge about it.

This, however, isn’t really the first time that this kind of a bizarre incident has happened. In the same flight, on April 24th, officers had discovered and seized two kilograms of unclaimed gold bars! And the more alarming fact was that the bars were concealed within the pouch in a life jacket attached below a passenger’s seat. The precision and level of skill involved in this raise serious concerns of how long the smuggling has actually been going on, and who is responsible.
