Born as Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje in a Marathi Buddhist family, Chota Rajan grew up in Tilak Nagar in Chembur, Mumbai.
Married to Sujata Nikalje and has three daughters.
Started off by black marketing cinema tickets outside Sahakar cinema in mid 1970s.
Shifted to work as a thief and bootlegger for Bada Rajan in 1980s.
Ascended the throne after Bada’s murder and earned the name Chota Rajan.
He impressed Dawood with his persistent hunt of a Bada Rajan’s murderer, Abdul Kunju and became his right hand man.
Fell off with Dawood after the 1993 Mumbai blasts. It is alleged that Chota Rajan had no hint of Dawood masterminding the massacre. He earned the name patriotic don.
He is said to have worked with Intelligence Agencies of India to provide information on Dawood.
Escaped an assassination led by Dawood’s second-in-command Chota Shakeel in Bangkok in 2000. Jumped from the roof and broke his back.
In 2001, killed two of Dawood’s associates Vinod Shetty and Sunil Soans who leaked information about his whereabouts aiding Shakeel’s plan.
Killed Sharad Shetty, Dawood’s chief finance manager and money laundering agent, in 2003. It was considered a bit hit as the murder spot (India Club in Dubai) was Dawood’s own playground.
Latest known murder was of Mid Day veteran crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in 2011.
Caught in Bali, Indonesia and voluntarily gave up to a single police officer. Apparently, he orchestrated his own arrest.
